215: Red Oktober Kalashnikov Championship (2017), Match Recon

This week’s Match Recon finds us taking quite the departure from the matches and gear that we normally shoot to a 1-Gun AK match at The Rifle Dynamics Red Oktober Kalashnikov Championship at the Tactical Performance Center.  ROK is a unique match as when it started it was really the only place where AK enthusiasts could come together in a competition environment. This year the match doubled.

Of course we had to go check it out and I brought 3GS Creative Consultant and Guest Host Wade Jones.

If you’re shooting or want to shoot the Red Oktober Kalashnikov Championship, this podcast well help you to be prepared.

Match Flavor – Is there a theme? Rifle heavy, shotgun heavy, etc? What sets it apart from other matches? Is there something only this match has? Yes! One-Gun Match, AK based, give AK shooters a place to get together and compete. AFAIK this was the first of its kind and it is sprouting up complimentary matches across the country. Lots of people in costumes, communist stuff and LOTS of Adidas track suits a-la russian mob. Tons of new competitors, some gun handling was a bit scary. New guys were not big on the reset even when prompted. Made for a tiring first day.
Terrain – Bay stages or natural terrain? Mixture? Mix of natural terrain and bay stages. 3 terrain, 6 bay
Skillz Utilized – Awkward positions, heavy focus on quad loading, offhand rifle, slugs at distance, long Pistol shots, crazy obstacles, etc Knowing how to use an AK. One stage had 10 round mags, one had a low crawl cooper tunnel, one had a rensing tunnel, 3 stage guns – Mauser, Some communist pistol, Rifle Dynamics 5.45 AK of some sort, Flash bang. Offhand rifle for sure. Speedy USPSA-Style Stages
Farthest Shot and/or # of long range targets No long range. Farthest target was 91 yards and it was a BC. Possibly a couple longer ones on stage 8.
Logistics- Checkin, scoring, prize table walk, etc No check in because PractiScore. Match shirts were placed on a table Saturday night and they disappeared quickly. Scoring was good, was not updated Saturday night. About a 2 hour delay in Afternoon squad starting on Saturday. Had to toss Stage 8 due to optic mount malfunction. Prize table was random-draw. Some great prizes for division winners and possibly a couple others, didn’t see any other prizes other than the top guns. RO’s were given pistols by Century Arms
Venue – Ease of access, creative use of facility, etc Easy to access, right off I15, Close to hotels and much more in St. George. BYOB.
Pre-Communication – Do you receive information about what to expect at the match or any other pertinent information Pretty good match web site. Didn’t get any emails and not much facebook activity.
Staff – How did the staff treat the shooters? Staff was great. RO on stage 2 was a bit persnikity (haha, it was Ken Nelson), one stage had RO’s that were a bit hurried but overall good.
Fun factor – Highly subjective, could hurt some feelings. Super fun, there were some gimmicky things but the fun outweighed the gimmick, running through trenches, racing a bowling ball on a Reub Goldberg machine.
Funny things that happen at the match. Dressing as 90’s gangster rappers the first day, and russian mafia the second
Best costume?
Shooting same gun as Becky
Becky whacking her melon
